Gay Salvador

Salvador has a lively gay and lesbian scene with Barra being the main focus of gay beach and nightlife; venues in other parts of the city are easily reached by taxi. Be careful about inviting people you’ve just met to come home with you!

Beaches
Porto da Barra is a popular gay beach, especially at the end away from the harbour. Praia das Artistas and Stella Maris are about half an hour from Barra by bus (along the coast road towards the airport) and are busy with a gay crowd at the weekends.

Bars and clubs
There are several gay bars in Barra close to the lighthouse – Off Club is the focus, with good music (up-tempo house moving into harder techno). It opens at 11.30 – the street bars are a meeting place beforehand.
Alongside the Porto da Barra beach, Barraco is also a mainly gay and lesbian venue – the terrace bar overlooking the bay is lovely. If you’re happy to catch a taxi, there are some gay venues close to Teatro Castro Alves, including Queens Clube and Atlântico Café  in Campo Grande.





While attitudes have relaxed greatly towards gay men and lesbians, remember that Brazil's culture is strongly Catholic. Be sensitive, and be discreet, especially outside of the city.
